Is it endangered or is it thriving?
African elephants live in Africa on Savannah or open woodlands. They weigh around 6 tons and can be over 3,5 meter tall. Their trunk is about 2 meter long.
ReplyDeleteElephants are not predators because they eat leaves, roots, fruits and grass. But there are predators which hunt for elephants. The most dangerous for young elephants are lions and crocodiles. Adult elephants can protect themselves using their trunks, tusks and the mass of their body. They can also make a loud sounds to scare predators away. Sad thing is that the only creature who can hunt adult elephants is human who hunt them for their tusks that are made of ivory.
Elephants are very important to african ecosystem. They pull down trees and break up thorny bushes, which help to create grasslands for other animals to survive. They create salt licks that are rich in nutrients for other animals. They dig waterholes in dry river beds that other animals can use as a water source, and their foot prints create
deep holes that water can collect in.
African elephants are adapted to hot african weather. They use their trunks to reach high to get food from the trees. They can use their tusks to dig up roots to eat. Trunks are also used to helps them cool off by sucking up the water and spraying on their skin.
Elephants are endangered. It was estimated that around 7-10 million elephants existed in the 1930’s. Today that number is only 300,000 mostly because of the hunting for ivory and habitat loss from human settlement.

hunting in 1900s whalers seeking whale oil drove them to the brink of extinction. hundred of thousand of whales were killed. the 1966 international whaling commission finally gave them protection, although they have only recovered slightly since then. blue whales are currently classified as endangered on the world conservation union red list. it is estimated that only 10,000-25,000 blue whales now swim the world's ocean

Lions and their habitats!
ReplyDeleteHabitat?
Lions are found in savannas, grasslands, dense bush and woodlands. For most of the time a lion lies around doing nothing. In scientific terms they are called Panthera leo. They are adapted by how they look. Growing to lengths of 8 feet and weighing as much as half a ton, the African lion is a powerful and emblematic apex predator of the Serengeti. As the dominant predator in its ecosystem, the lion exerts considerable top-down influence to keep the entire ecosystem in check. Due to habitat destruction and human persecution, fewer than 25,000 lions remain in the wild. The species' continued survival depends in part on an understanding of the crucial role it plays in the savanna ecosystem.
